Admin Roles and Permissions Overview
Overview
Admins control how your organization uses the platform. They manage settings, define organizational structure, and perform operational tasks such as sending messages or managing users. Admin access is governed by roles and role types, which determine what actions an admin can perform and where they can perform them.
This page provides an overview of how admins, roles, and permissions work together. It also introduces related topics that explain each concept in more detail.
How Admin Roles Work
Each admin is assigned one or more roles. A role is tied to a specific role type, such as organization, groups, channels, or IPAWS. Each role includes a defined set of permissions that allow the admin to complete assigned tasks.
Regroup provides predefined roles with fixed permissions. You can also create custom roles when you need more control over what an admin can do.
After signing in as an Organization Admin, you can:
-
Create new admins
-
Assign predefined roles
-
Create and assign custom roles with specific permissions
Predefined Roles vs. Custom Roles
-
Predefined roles
These roles are always available and include non-updatable permissions.
See Predefined Roles and Permissions for details.
-
Custom roles
These roles enable you to define permissions tailored to your organization’s specific needs.
To create one, you must first define the role and its permissions.
Note: You can assign an admin to an existing role while creating their profile. Predefined role permissions cannot be modified.

Key Terms and Concepts
Before working with admins and roles, it is important to understand the following terms:
Admin
A user assigned one or more roles. Admins can access resources and perform tasks based on their assigned permissions.
Role Type
A functional area of the platform, such as organization, groups, channels, or IPAWS. Each role belongs to a single role type. Permissions can only be customized within that role type.
Role
A collection of permissions within a role type. Roles define what actions an admin can perform. Roles can be predefined or custom.
Permission Grid
A structured view of all available permissions within a role type. You can use the permission grid to customize permissions for custom roles. Permissions can only be modified for the selected role type.
Best Practice
If an admin needs access to multiple role types, such as both channels and groups, create separate roles for each role type and assign all relevant roles to that admin.
